Today, analyst firm DCIG released a report titled “2026-27 DCIG Top 5 VMware Alternatives”. This report evaluated 19 different virtualization solutions as alternatives to VMware and listed StorPool with Oracle Virtualization in their “Top 5” list. Download the report now.
DCIG evaluated the various solutions for their data resilience, ease of deployment, licensing, management, modern infrastructure, and support. They noted that migrating away from VMware most likely means moving to a Linux KVM-based hypervisor, although a few of the alternatives support Microsoft Hyper-V.
Requirements
DCIG noted several requirements for VMware alternatives, including:
- Notification alerts – email, syslog, and/or SNMP traps.
- Command-line interface (CLI) – Many IT administrators still want or need a CLI.
- Include their own hypervisor – It sounds obvious, but not all solutions include even a Linux-based KVM hypervisor.
- Multiple data protection features – Clones, mirrors, replication, or snapshots, especially VM-level snapshots.
- Software-defined networking (SDN) – Handles, directs, and prioritizes communications between different nodes, minimizing the need for physical network switches.
- Web-based management GUI – Allowing for management from anywhere, although DCIG notes that for some solutions’ GUIs do not provide all management capabilities.
DCIG also identified several features all of their Top 5 solutions have, including:
- Software-defined storage (SDS)
- Support for multiple HA options
- Certified for deployment on multiple OEM server platforms
- Persistent storage for containers
- On-premises software deployments
Where StorPool with Oracle Virtualization Stands Out
DCIG noted several differentiators that set the StorPool with Oracle Virtualization solution apart from other VM alternatives. These include:
- Can achieve sub-100 microsecond (μs) storage latency
While some organizations can only achieve sub-millisecond latency by using an external all-flash storage array, StorPool with Oracle Virtualization provides sub-100μs in-VM latency even in its HCI deployment model. - Permits the deployment of heterogeneous nodes in a single cluster
Different applications and VMs have different specific needs. The StorPool with Oracle Virtualization HCI solution allows organizations to move beyond simple linear scaling by allowing compute-only or storage-only nodes to be added to an HCI cluster. Additionally, individual nodes in a cluster can be different makes and/or models and have different configurations. - Includes built-in backup and disaster recovery
StorPool provides VolumeCare for snapshot-based backups and Disaster Recovery Engine, a purpose-built DR solution for KVM-based clouds, at no additional cost, requiring no additional licensing. Disaster Recovery Engine supports per-VM replication and multiple DR models.
